DeDe Lopez
DeDe Lopez (Denise Lopez) is a Swedish singer, songwriter, producer and DJ with Mexican roots. Born in Mexico City and raised in Stockholm, she has built a career spanning more than three decades, with over 500,000 albums sold worldwide.
DeDe is known for her unique musical style, combining Swedish pop, R&B and hip-hop. She is one of Sweden’s first female rappers and has worked throughout her career as an artist, producer, record label owner and songwriter.
Early Career and Breakthrough
DeDe’s musical journey began in Stockholm in the late 1980s, where she quickly established herself as a sought-after dancer and backing vocalist. Between 1989 and 1994, she toured internationally with Dr. Alban, Melodie MC and the international dance group Culture Beat, known for their worldwide hit Mr. Vain. These years laid the foundation for her future solo career.
In 1994, she signed her first record deal with Sony Music Sweden, and in 1995 released her debut album TBA (Totally Bombastic Anecdotes). The album became an immediate success in Japan and went gold within a month. The single Party became a major hit, and DeDe performed for two consecutive nights at Tokyo Dome in front of 50,000 people each night.
International Success and Historic Milestones
By the late 1990s, DeDe had established herself as an international artist. In 1999, she was selected as the exclusive opening act for Michael Jackson at his concert at Ullevi in Gothenburg. She is therefore the only Swedish artist to have been an opening act for Michael Jackson at one of his concerts in Sweden.
She also opened for 50 Cent during his European tour in Helsinki alongside Pras (Fugees), further establishing her international position across both the pop and hip-hop scenes.
Collaborations and Creative Range
During this period, DeDe collaborated with some of Sweden’s most prominent producers and songwriters, including Max Martin, Andreas Carlsson, Anders Bagge, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger, Herbie Crichlow, Jakke Erixson and British producer Derek Bramble.
Internationally, she has collaborated with artists including Pras, MC Lyte and Father MC. In Sweden, she has collaborated with Blues and Dogge Doggelito.
Independence and International Expansion
In 1999, DeDe founded her own record label and music publishing company, giving her complete creative freedom. In 2002, the album Like a Queen was released in Japan through Epic Records, followed in 2003 by her first DVD compilation featuring live performances.
Throughout the 2000s, she continued to achieve international success. The 2007 single Turn You On, featuring Pras, became a major hit in Sweden and charted internationally. During the same period, she made her debut in China with performances at leading clubs in Beijing and tours throughout Asia.
The albums Slave to the Sound (2010) and Black Lace & Leather (2010) demonstrated her musical versatility and artistic development.
Later Years, Television and New Projects
In 2018 and 2021, DeDe released the critically acclaimed singles Dare To Change The World feat. MC Lyte and Dare To Change The World Pt. II, which reached high chart positions in several countries, including No. 5 on the US Top 20.
In 2021, she became a member of the female supergroup SUPER FËMMES. The group has performed on major Swedish television programs including Bingolotto and Lotta på Liseberg, and was nominated in 2023 for Best Pop Song of the Year at the Hollywood Independent Music Awards.
In 2023, DeDe released a modern remix of her 1997 classic My Lover, introducing the song to a new generation of listeners. Her latest single, Push It, featuring LA Rush, is a modern house interpretation of Salt-N-Pepa’s iconic 1980s hit and has gained strong attention on international dance floors.
